Strange Engine Noises Could Indicate Engine Damage

Crossroads Automotive is the best auto service shop in Topeka, and you can count on us to help you if your engine is making strange noises. We want to make sure that your car, SUV, or truck is always safe and reliable when it is on the road. Depending on the noise the engine is making, it could be damaged.

Grinding

For example, if you hear grinding or metallic noises coming from the engine, you may have a problem with the oil pressure or the level of oil that is circulating through the engine. If you continue to drive your automobile, you could cause serious engine damage without enough oil.

Hissing

Hissing is not as much of a problem. This usually suggests that you have a leaking vacuum hose that needs to be replaced or an auto fluid leak. Naturally, when the auto fluid drips onto hot engine parts, it will hiss or sizzle. If the problem is a vacuum leak, we can replace the house. We can also find the fluid leak.

Knocking

Unfortunately, an engine that knocks could be a damaged engine. The knocking sound could be the pistons banging against the cylinder walls because the rod bearings are worn. You may also have a problem with how the fuel is being detonated in the cylinders. If there are multiple detonations, the engine will knock.

Popping

A leaking exhaust manifold will make a popping sound when the exhaust seeps out of the crack. This may also sound as if the engine is tapping. If the leak is a small one, you may hear hissing or squealing. Another thing that can make a popping sound is a clogged catalytic converter. The converter can get clogged by the sulfur and carbon that it treats in your vehicle’s exhaust.

Roaring

Your engine is going to roar like a lion if the catalytic converter has been stolen. You may not believe this, but this is a common form of automobile theft. The engine will also roar like a lion if you need to replace the muffler. You do not want to drive your engine when it is this loud. You may end up getting pulled over.

Squealing

Finally, we mentioned above that a leaking exhaust manifold can make your engine squeal. Another thing that can make your engine squeal is a loose accessory belt.

Crossroads Automotive in Topeka, KS, would be happy to determine the reason why your engine is making strange noises. Once we find the problem, we will fix it.
