Signs Your Diesel Engine Is Having Problems

Diesel engines are sturdy and capable of handling much more than gasoline engines are. Both engines are amazing, but if you need more power and torque for less fuel, then a diesel is the way to go. This doesn’t mean these engines don’t have their share of problems; all machinery breaks down. Crossroads Automotive works on both diesel and gasoline engines. Here are some of the diesel engine problems we fix.

Hard to Start

Lack of maintenance can make a diesel engine very hard to start. If the engine is in really bad shape, it won’t start at all. Your diesel will crank and start slower than a gasoline engine will, but it should never be hard to start or refuse to start.

No Power

One of the things that diesel engines are known for is power. If the diesel engine has a fuel problem, such as a dirty fuel filter or clogged fuel injectors, or if there is too much lubrication in the engine, you may experience engine power loss.

Dirty Fuel

One thing that makes diesel fuel more energy-dense is its thickness. The advantage is you get more miles per gallon. The disadvantage is the fuel gets contaminated easily. Contaminated fuel can introduce dirt, soot, and water into the engine.

Black Exhaust

This one might make you tilt your head in confusion because all diesel engines have black exhaust. The key here is excess exhaust. You shouldn’t see a change in how much exhaust your vehicle releases. You’ve got a fuel issue if it increases.

Oil Oxidizing

Oil oxidizes when air infiltrates the motor oil and creates bubbles. This can damage your diesel engine because the oil can’t lubricate properly with the air bubbles. This problem generally only occurs if you haven’t driven your diesel in months.

Noise, Noise, Noise

Finally, your diesel engine is louder than a gas engine would be, but the difference shouldn’t be extremely noticeable. If your engine is too loud or you hear it knocking, you might have an issue with the air/fuel balance or fuel injectors.
