Unless your battery is old or corroded, it’s possible that the reason why your car won’t start is that you have a dead alternator. The alternator keeps the battery charged so it never runs out of charge. Without the alternator, the battery would discharge until it was dead. Crossroads Automotive advises that the following signs point more to a dead alternator than a dead battery.
Accessory Malfunction
The alternator also powers many of your vehicle’s accessories. If these accessories begin to malfunction, it’s likely that the alternator is not powering them as it should be. For example, your GPS may not work or your radio may turn off and refuse to turn back on. Power accessories such as windows and seats can also slow down or stop.
Battery Light
If the battery light turns on, this could actually be an indication that your alternator is going bad. If your car is equipped with it, you may also get a dashboard warning that says ALT or GEN.
Dead Battery
If the alternator does not keep the battery charged, the battery will die. One way to determine whether the problem is the alternator or the battery is to jumpstart the battery and wait to see if it holds a charge. If it doesn’t, it’s more likely that your alternator is going bad and the battery is fine
Frequent Stalling
The alternator also provides power to your vehicle’s spark plugs. If your vehicle is stalling frequently, especially after you start it, it’s possible that the problem lies with the alternator, and it is unable to provide power to the spark plugs to keep the engine combustion going
Growling Noises
Growling noises suggest that the internal mechanisms of the alternator have worn down and are grinding against each other. Whining noises suggest that the alternator belt, which is the accessory belt, is too loose and needs to be tightened and adjusted.
Hard Starts
You may find it difficult to get your vehicle started with a bad alternator although it may start eventually. This is the point at which you should have the battery and alternator inspected. Don’t wait until you can’t start your automobile at all.
Headlight Trouble
One of the most noticeable signs of alternator trouble is problems with your headlights. They may flicker, get too bright, and then go dim. You will also notice a significant difference in the brightness of your taillights and your interior lights.
