Five Signs That Point to a Bad Clutch

Driving a manual transmission is fun, isn’t it? Many people prefer driving a stick shift because they feel that they are more in control of their automobiles. Whether you drive a manual or automatic transmission, Crossroads Automotive can service and repair it. If you do drive a manual transmission, there will come a time when you need to replace the clutch. Here are some signs that that time is now.

1. Acceleration That Is Sluggish

Part of what the clutch does is remove the power from the engine temporarily so it can be shifted to the transmission. The transmission needs this power so it can turn the driveshaft. The driveshaft turns the wheels. If your clutch is going bad, it may slip, which means it doesn’t stay engaged. Consequently, you may not have a complete power transfer from the engine and your acceleration will be sluggish.

2. Burning Odors Coming From the Clutch

Another sign that your clutch is slipping is if it smells hot. You should never smell burning odors coming from the clutch. If you do, this is an indication that something inside the clutch has gone awry. It could be that we need to replace some of the internal mechanisms that make the clutch work. It could also be that we may need to replace your clutch.

3. Change in the Clutch Resistance

Your clutch should give you the same resistance each time that you use it. If you notice a difference in the resistance that it gives you, or if you notice that the bite point is higher than normal, this is a sign that your clutch needs to be replaced. Your clutch pedal should never feel extremely hard or soft or squishy. It also shouldn’t sink to the floor without catching.

4. Constant Gear Shifting Problems

Obviously, if you are having problems shifting through the gear cycle, your clutch is going out. You may find that your vehicle does not want to go into gear or that it doesn’t want to shift through the gears. You may also hear grinding or squealing sounds when you shift gears. Any of these signs indicate that the clutch needs to be replaced.

5. Grumbling or Squeaking Sounds

Finally, the clutch itself may grumble or squeak when you press down on it. Again, this is a sign that there is something going on with the internal mechanisms of the clutch. We can inspect your clutch to see what’s wrong and either adjusted, rebuild it, or replace it.
